CGF (corn-gluten-feed) is a byproduct of the corn milling process, a major feed ingredient in ruminant diets, particularly for beef and dairy cattle. Fortunately, it is a very healthy and useful byproduct, since it is a great source of energy, vitamins and mineral substances.
Corn Gluten Feed
Corn gluten feed is a by-product from the manufacture of cornstarch and corn syrup.
It is a medium protein feed, which contains almost the same Total Digestible Nutrients level as barley. The protein in corn gluten feed is degraded relatively rapidly in the rumen.

CORN GERM
Corm Germ is the endosperm of Maize grain, a yellow-coloured seed, pleasantly nutty in taste and oil-rich.
Maize germ is a high energy, very palatable and digestible feed offering a good source of ‘slow release’ starch.
What is Corn Gem?
- a by-product of oil extraction from maize germs obtained from maize processing
- has a relatively high protein content (22-31% DM)
- is relatively close to corn gluten feed but contains more protein, more oil, less fibre and about the same amount of starch and is, therefore, of higher nutritional value.
Benefits
- Research trials at various universities have seen equal or better performance when CGF, either in the dried or wet form, is included in the ration at both dairy and beef cattle.
- Extensive research shows CGF products are highly digestible alternative sources of protein, energy and phosphorus.
- CGF products can optimize performance and reduce feed costs when incorporated into beef growing and finishing rations.
- Contain low levels of starch.
- The wet products offer some performance advantages but with potential transportation and storage challenges that can limit their use.
For growing or backgrounding rations, our preference would be the corn gluten feed. - Better animal performance using CGF in higher roughage feeding programs than in high grain or concentrate diets.
- CGF’s lower protein levels, low fat and low starch content make it a compatible alternative. CGF can be fed at relatively high inclusion rates, effectively providing the required protein as well as replacing a large portion of the grain in growing diets.
